Robert (Bob) Walters (Ph.D. North Carolina State University)has a broad range of experience in an academic environment, small business entrepreneurship, and government service. His specific appointments include:

- Department Head, Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, Virginia Tech, 2002-‐2006
- Professor, 1992-‐2002, Associate Professor, 1989-‐1992, Assistant Professor, 1985-‐1989
- President and Founder, AeroSoft, Inc., 1988-‐1998
- NRC Research Associate, NASA Langley Research Center, 1981-‐1984
With a broad range of experience in academia coupled with small business development skills, Walters has a broad view of the challenges associated with large research universities and the faculty that work at those institutions. During his tenure as the senior research officer at a large university, he oversaw the growth and development of the research enterprise that resulted in an increase of NSF research expenditures more than any other public university in the nation. Walters was the Founding Chair and Board Director of the Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation from 2009-‐2015. He also chaired the Board of Directors of the Virginia Tech Intellectual Property corporation from 2007-‐2015 and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center. He was a member of the Executive Committee for the Council on Research Policy and Graduate Education (CRPGE) for the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) from 2008-‐2011 and a member of the Board of Governors for Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2007-‐2011.
Walters consulting experience includes work with General Electric, United Technology, McDonnell Douglas Corporation and Lockheed Missiles and Space Company to name a few. He has served the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in several capacities including Chair of the AIAA Ethics Committee and is a past President of the Aerospace Department Chairs Association.
