Richard (Dick) Robertson was the Vice President of Student Services at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California in 1987, a position he held for 29 years before retiring in June 2016. In 2006-07 he served MiraCosta as Interim Vice President of Instruction, an assignment that continued into fall semester 2007. He served as MiraCosta’s Acting President from July to August and as Interim President from June to December, 2014. In addition, he served as president of the California Community College Chief Student Services Administrators Association in 2004-05. He has served on nine accreditation teams for California Community Colleges, and five years as the lead facilitator for the Community College Student Development Leadership Institute for the National Council on Student Development.
He enlisted in the United States Navy and served, during the Vietnam War, as a Qualified Officer of the Deck and Gunnery Officer aboard the aircraft carrier Coral Sea (CVA-43) for three years and as Executive Officer of USS Seneca (ATF-91) for one year. In 1971 he was hired as the Student Activities Director at Butler County Community College in Butler, Pennsylvania. While there, he served as Dean of Students, was an adjunct business professor for ten years, and served one year as Dean of Instruction.
Dick was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and grew up mostly in Grand Haven, Michigan. He graduated from East Lansing High School in East Lansing, Michigan and then graduated from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio in 1965 with a BA in Political Science. He received a Master’s Degree from Michigan State University in College Student Personnel Administration in 1967. He received a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Michigan State in 1981. He volunteers on Saturdays in the Emergency Room at Tri-City Medical Center. He is an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He enjoys swimming, walking, reading and golf.
