Bengfort's career began in the political arena, serving on the Executive Staff of a Governor and a U.S. congressman.  After Capitol Hill, he served as Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Communications for Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia, Maryland. Bengfort introduced the college to Strategic Marketing Planning, cultivated media and government relations, advised fundraising efforts, and spearheaded a new visual identity and acclaimed brand strategy that attracted students and supporters with the promise that “You Can Get There from Here.”   He served as President of a statewide affinity group that cultivated public and governmental support of Maryland's 16 community colleges.  Bengfort co-chaired HCC's Enrollment Management Team for 12 years which he worked to integrate Student Services, Academic Affairs, Information Technology, Counseling, and other college departments to enhance the recruitment and retention of students.  Bengfort has served on boards and committees for numerous community organizations including the Community Emergency Response Network; Howard County Economic Development Authority; FIRN, an organization providing services to foreign-born residents; Howard County Public School System; Howard County Chamber of Commerce; Family Life Center, a nonprofit counseling service; Leadership Howard County; United Way Campaign; and the March of Dimes

Bengfort holds bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Russian from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in public relations and corporate communications from the University of Maryland College Park, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Morgan State University specializing in community colleges. Bengfort completed a doctoral program that included study of enrollment management, and now offer my expertise as an independent researcher and consultant for community colleges. He is currently an adjunct professor at Morgan State University, teaching leadership and administration in the Community College Leadership and Doctoral Program.
